Three players the Steelers could add to their roster before training camp

As offseason workouts are underway and teams begin to evaluate their rosters, a second wave of free agent signings and player swaps are bound to hit the NFL.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, in particular, are no strangers as of late to making moves. Within this calendar year alone the team traded with the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and then sent their own receiver, George Pickens, to the Dallas Cowboys.

It would appear General Manager Omar Khan has been more aggressive than his predecessor Kevin Colbert. Last season Khan sent WR Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers for CB Donte Jackson and also acquired QB Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears. As the regular season wore on, Khan also acquired Jets WR Mike Williams and Packers DE Preston Smith as the team pushed for a postseason run.

Of course, that was after Kenny Pickett was also traded to the Philadelphia Eagles!

Could Khan have some more moves up his sleeve as the Steelers prep to begin their training camp in a little over a month? I believe there are three names, all hotly linked to the Steelers, that we should keep an eye on in the coming days and weeks.

Aaron Rodgers

The courting over the former four-time NFL MVP seems to be an on and off again topic with the media and fans. Some are saying its only a matter of time before a Rodgers signing is announced. Others think it’ll never happen.

The optimistic ones believe Pittsburgh will hit jackpot city if Rodgers inks a deal with the team. The pessimistic folks feel the 41-year-old’s best days are behind him. Everyone in-between isn’t sure if the Steelers need Rodgers to succeed either.

Rodgers played his last two seasons with the New York Jets, appearing in 18 games. He played four plays in 2023 before a serious injury sidelined him for the entire season. He returned last year to complete 63% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Those numbers are far from his MVP days of throwing for 48 touchdowns and five or fewer interceptions, leading Rodgers to be released by the Jets this offseason. However, the stats represent more than Pittsburgh has had at the position since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement, leading many to believe the veteran signal caller will join the team in time for training camp.

Gabriel Davis

Set to meet the Steelers this week, Davis is a former fourth-round draft selection of the Buffalo Bills who left there to play with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024. He appeared in ten games, watching his young potential crater due to an inability to stay on the field and the instability of the Jaguars as a whole.

Prior to 2024, Davis took the top off of many opposing defenses, catching 163 passes for 27 touchdowns with a 16.7 yards-per-reception average.

He would provide a veteran presence for whomever is throwing the ball for the Steelers, adding a serious threat alongside the newly acquired Metcalf and forcing teams to double-think single coverage schemes against either receiver.

Davis, was released last month due to his large contract and the Jaguars adding Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter in back-to-back drafts. There may be some concern about his rehab from a torn meniscus suffered back in November, but that will be smoothed over during his visit.

Jonnu Smith

Another big rumor coming out of the last week is that the only Pro Bowl selection of the Miami Dolphins has been inquired about by the Steelers.

The news that tight end Jonnu Smith might join the black and gold comes as a surprise, since the Steelers already appear to have a wealth of talent at the position with Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington.

However, Smith is a long-time Arthur Smith favorite, having played with the Titans when Smith was an offensive coordinator there as well as one year while Smith was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

Smith had a career season in Miami in 2024, catching 88 balls for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. The soon-to-be 30-year-old could catch on quick with the Steelers, adding another big play threat that could mitigate the need for multi-receiver sets and allow Smith to deploy packages that keeps the defense guessing against the run or pass.

Three players the Steelers could add to their roster before training camp appeared first on Steel City Underground.

LeBron James takes another shot at Brian Windhorst

We may be a little closer to understanding the reason after James and the social accounts for his Mind the Game podcast on Tuesday took to X to flaunt their success to one of their early haters: Brian Windhorst. In a video posted to the podcast’s X account, Windhorst can be seen saying NBA fans “want to talk about the drama” and that “if [James] sits down with (co-host) Steve Nash and all he does Xs and Os for an hour, people aren’t going to like that, either.” Soon after it was posted, James added a message atop the video. “Long ways from being done!! Sucks they have to listen to 2 guys who know nothing about basketball talk about basketball! Sorry

Knicks interested in Ime Udoka, Jason Kidd

Two head coaches who are not currently available but said to interest the Knicks, according to league sources, are Dallas’ Jason Kidd and Houston’s Ime Udoka. One source with knowledge of the Rockets’ thinking told The Stein Line categorically that permission to speak with Udoka would be rejected if the Knicks requested it. A similar response would be expected from the Mavericks, but a read on their position as conclusive as Houston’s could not be immediately confirmed Tuesday night.

Potential Kevin Durant trade to happen before the draft?

John Gambadoro: The team that I heard last night in speaking to somebody pretty close to the situation with KD, is keep your eye on the Spurs. KD could have some interest in the Spurs, that may be a good landing spot for him with Fox and Wemby an up and coming team on the rise, that has a great defensive anchor on their team, and a terrific young player in Stephon Castle. (…) What could the Suns get? You might have to take Harrison Barnes back to make it work but you could get Devin Vassel, who is a very young player (…) I expect that a KD deal would happen right before the draft, because you want to include draft capital in the deal, so a KD trade would come up this month sometime before the draft, probably close to the draft if

Tyrese Haliburton's trainer to Brandon Jennings: You never won s—t

“Why u so quiet now you groupie a– trainer, Brandon Jennings wrote on X. “Where is the group text chain now!!!! U the biggest basketball groupie trainer ever.” After staying silent the first time, Drew Hanlen did not take the second callout sitting down. The 35-year-old trainer showed off some of his trash-talking skills in his response to Jennings. “I’m getting two of my clients (Haliburton & Chet Holmgren) ready for the finals so don’t have time to waste on your dumba– takes Side note: Maybe if your trainer would talked shit to you, you wouldn’t have shot 37% from the field & 23% from 3 in the playoffs while never winning s–t”

Victor Wembanyama surprises teen at neighborhood court, challenges him to H.O.R.S.E.

Miller Borushko was shooting hoops by himself at his North Side neighborhood basketball court when he got incredibly lucky. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama walked up and asked if he could join in. “He walked up and asked my name. I said, ‘I’m Miller.’ And he was like, ‘I’m Victor,” Miller told KSAT. “I tried to stay chill about it.” Then Wembanyama asked Miller if he wanted to play a game of H.O.R.S.E., which was captured on a neighborhood surveillance camera. “Wemby won,” laughed Miller. “He won on a left-handed three-pointer.” To Miller’s credit, he said he earned an H and an O in the game. “He could have easily just dunked and won the game, but he didn’t do that,” Miller added. “He just wanted to have fun.”
