The 49ers star reportedly wants to be a Steeler

On Sunday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers had granted permission to wide receiver Deebo Samuel to seek a trade partner. The former All-Pro seemed to have a growing disconnect with the franchise during their down season and was given the thumbs up to seek other options and explore trade possibilities.

The Steelers were naturally listed as a team that fans should keep an eye on, given their lackluster receiving corps. Now, it’s being reported by Noah Strackbein of Sports Illustrated that Samuel wants to be a Steeler.

“According to a source from another NFL team, Samuel and his agent Tory Dandy are ‘absolutely’ going to attempt to engage with the Steelers, making them an immediate candidate if they share the same interest,” Strackbein writes.

Samuel is coming off a season in which he caught 51 passes for 670 yards and three touchdowns. The 51 catches were his lowest in a season since 2020 when he only played in seven games.

As I pointed out previously when discussing the potential of a Samuel trade, the talent makes sense for the Steelers to want to bring him in, but the 49ers will have to eat a good chunk of his salary for it to make sense financially for Pittsburgh. Having him as the No. 2 receiver who works underneath and after the catch would be a great compliment to George Pickens.
