Terry Bradshaw’s No. 12 remains unofficially retired with the Steelers.

The team recently announced that newly-signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be wearing No. 8 in the black and gold, rather than the No. 12 he had during his 18 years with the Green Bay Packers.

It’s hardly a surprise — the Steelers were never expected to put Bradshaw’s number back in circulation (the Pittsburgh great doesn’t seem to be fan of Rodgers, either), and Rodgers wore No. 8 during his time with the New York Jets to avoid using Joe Namath’s old number.

Namath said he’d let Rodgers wear his retired No. 12, but Rodgers opted to wear No. 8, which is also what he wore during his collegiate career at Cal.

The No. 8 on the Steelers was previously worn by current punter Corliss Waitman; it’s unclear what Waitman switched to, or if he received any compensation from Rodgers to make the change.

Prior to Rodgers, past Steelers quarterbacks Tommy Maddox and Kenny Pickett wore the No. 8.
