The Steelers are getting ready to usher in a new era of the Black and Gold as the team is set to unveil a new alternate uniform for the 2025 season. After years of a relatively consistent look, the Steelers will announce the new design in an official reveal announced for July 21st, days before the team reports to training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

With NFL teams now permitted to wear alternate color helmets with their other uniform options, could Pittsburgh be looking to embrace a previous throwback uniform and helmet? Or will it be a completely new design, like the most recent color rush set? And how might the new look blend the franchise’s historic past while embracing a contemporary look?
As we awaiting the Pittsburgh Steelers news, here’s a look at some of the options the organization could draw inspiration from based on uniforms they’ve worn throughout their history.
75th Anniversary Throwbacks
The 75th Anniversary uniforms, first debuted in 2007, are a strong candidate to return. These popular throwbacks remained in circulation for several years.
These jerseys drew inspiration from the team’s early history, specifically the period before 1963 when the Steelers wore gold helmets. The 75th Anniversary rendition updated this look with black facemasks (replacing gray ones) and white pants featuring a gold stripe. Notably, numbers were omitted from the shoulder pads on these jerseys.
This 1960s-inspired design was a fan favorite for years until it was replaced by the 1934-inspired “Bumblebee” jerseys in 2012. Many consider the 75th Anniversary uniform to be the best of the Steelers’ alternate uniforms over the years, making its potential return in 2025 highly anticipated.
Classic Block Numbers
Another throwback look was introduced during the 2018 season, when the Steelers unveiled uniforms that more closely resembled their current style. Block numbering and lettering, later replaced by the same font used for the numbers on the front of the helmet, was paired with a return to gray facemasks (off and on) with the black helmets.
Little else changed with the classic look, which continued to be in use through the 2023 season, when they were last worn during a Christmas Eve night game that simultaneously celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception and running back Franco Harris’ #32 being retired.
Whatever look the Steelers are searching for, there’s a strong possibility that block numbers will return as part of the alternate approach.
Color Rush Uniforms
As part of the Color Rush program initiated by the NFL, teams were producing uniforms that used their primary color for both their jersey tops and bottoms. The result was a red-green color blindness nightmare when the concept first debuted with an all-red Buffalo Bills team facing an all-green New York Jets opponent.
Pittsburgh opted for black over gold, thankfully, when they introduced their version of the Color Rush alternates in 2016. Despite appearing similar to the 75th anniversary set, the Color Rush uniforms featured the same stripes as their regular kits, albeit all gold rather than alternating gold and white as they appear on the home and away uniforms.
The Color Rush jerseys also sported block numbers, which also unlike the 75th year set, were featured on the shoulder pads. The team also opted for black helmets over gold alternates for the new look, along with black socks and black pants that had a thick gold stripe.
Some of the speculation surrounding the new uniforms is that they will not be “throwbacks” that mimic a previous era in Steelers history, rather, the new jerseys will replace the current Color Rush scheme. If that were to occur, could the Steelers go with an all-gold or all-white alternate look?
1970 Season Uniforms
Don’t look twice, that’s not a Photoshop edit or AI generated image you’re looking at. No, that’s a seldom seen Steelers “white on white” look from the early 70’s which lasted roughly two seasons before being permanently retired.
We had previously speculated years ago that this could be the original Color Rush configuration before the all black sets were introduced. With a new jersey announcement on the horizon, perhaps the organization will go back to the drawing board with a predominantly white uniform as an option.
AFC North rivals such as the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns have introduced all white options over the last couple of years, making this look a strong contender for the Steelers too. Only one problem: would they ditch the traditional black uniforms at home for this Tide laundry commercial set? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out!
