The Steelers have a fall-back plan if Aaron Rodgers falls through
The Pittsburgh Steelers remain in quarterback limbo when it comes to Aaron Rodgers. Now, the four-time MVP continues to drop hints that he is coming to Pittsburgh, most notably saying he believes “there’s a team that might play in Chicago this year on a road trip” while doing a Q&A with Mike Stud.
That said, the Steelers seemingly have a backup plan if Rodgers surprisingly decides not to be Pittsburgh’s next quarterback. ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler revealed that the Steelers are still keeping an eye on Kirk Cousins as a fallback option.
“I had some conversations with people this week that led me to believe that Cousins is at the very least on the Steelers’ radar if something were to fall through on Rodgers,” Fowler said on SportsCenter.
Fowler then broke down what he believes would need to happen for a potential trade.
“Cousins has $37.5 million in guarantees between this year and next year,” Fowler said. “Somebody’s on the hook for that – whether it’s Atlanta or someone else. So to facilitate a trade, Atlanta would need a team to offset some of that money, whether it’s $4 million, $20 million, whatever it is. But the feeling around the league is that Atlanta has not been willing to budge on this.”
So if the Steelers did need to turn their full attention to Cousins, they will all but certainly have to take on some of that guaranteed money. If there is a way they could take all of it up front, then it would certainly be more worth doing than eating money in 2026 when Cousins would be a stop-gap bridge if he were still on the roster at all.
