The Steelers want to continue doing business with Fields

For the second straight offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be figuring out what they’ll do at the most important position in sports. Both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are set to be free agents when the new league year starts in March. And while it feels like Wilson has played his final snap in Pittsburgh following five consecutive losses, the Steelers would like to keep Fields around, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

“Obviously one-and-done does not help Russell Wilson’s case,” Breer said on the Thursday Night Football postgame show. “They’d like to keep working with Justin Fields, but he’s not their starter and there could be guys like Aaron Rodgers or Kirk Cousins available.”

Going with another aging, soon-to-be-retired quarterback would be malpractice by the Steelers. Keeping Fields around makes the most sense out of the three options Breer listed off. He’s going to be 26 when the 2025 season begins, and he played well in the six games he started. bring him back on a two-year deal with a potential opt-out after the first year. Best case scenario is he plays well, leads the Steelers to the playoffs and they win a game while he continually shows strides of having the ability to be a franchise quarterback. Worst case scenario, they stink and they draft someone in a 2026 draft class that is expected to be loaded with quarterback talent and they can start a proper rebuild.
