The latest on the developing quarterback situation in Pittsburgh
It’s no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers have a big decision coming up at quarterback this offseason. With Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both set to hit free agency this offseason, it means the organization will have to decide what’s next in the team’s quest to find the future of the position in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era.
In an ESPN+ article Saturday highlighting various stories emerging from the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl and other inside reports, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler shared some buzz he’s been hearing about the future at QB in Pittsburgh:
Some in the Pittsburgh organization are comfortable with Justin Fields being the team’s QB in 2025. He has upside and more mobility at this stage than Russell Wilson, the Steelers’ other free-agent passer. But as one NFC executive pointed out, Fields didn’t seem to have great chemistry with receiver George Pickens, so it’s possible that could play a part.
Earlier this week, Steelers President Art Rooney II held a small session with the media, addressing the fact that the quarterback position would be the biggest priority throughout the offseason. In that meeting, Rooney acknowledged that there was a desire to re-sign one of their two acquisitions from the 2024 offseason ahead of 2025 — but not both.
This latest report now reinforces the fact that it could be Fields who is favored to be re-signed over Wilson, especially considering the fact that he’s younger (set to turn 26 this offseason) and bound to be signed to a more cap-friendly deal than Wilson. Per Spotrac, Wilson is projected at a market value of a two-year, $77,466,170 contract, while Fields currently projects for a one-year, $6,430,931 deal based on contracts signed by quarterbacks at a similar age with a similar history of production.
As far as Wilson goes, there has been some rumored potential for Wilson to head to Las Vegas this offseason, potentially joining his former head coach Pete Carroll, who was recently hired as head coach of the Raiders.
Fields went 4-2 as a starter in the 2024 season, managing a career-high 65.8% completion rate and 93.3 NFL passer rating and career lows with a 0.6% interception rate and 9.04% sack rate.
