Another offseason of wondering about a 49ers receiver.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is officially on the trade market, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and subsequently Samuel himself.
Schefter reported that the 49ers were likely going to move Samuel this offseason and gave him permission to seek trade partners on X, to which Samuel quoted it and posted two prayer hands.
Naturally, this will lead to a conversation on whether or not the Pittsburgh Steelers should have interest in the dynamic dual threat receiver and runner. Samuel is set to make just over $17.5 million and have a cap hit of roughly $15.8 million in 2025. And given that the former All-Pro had a somewhat lackluster season in 2024, the 49ers will almost certainly have to eat some of that money in order to get a deal done.
Should that happen, then of course it’s worth at least having the conversation if you’re the Steelers. However, it won’t solve all of their problems at receiver. While Samuel is terrific with the ball in his hands and after the catch, he isn’t a good separator or a natural No. 1. Should they be able to find ways to easily get the ball in his hands, then absolutely it would make sense. The natural idea would be to have Samuel be the underneath eater while George Pickens continues to keep defenses honest over the top while also adding someone like Darius Slayton to the group, as well. A trio of Pickens, Samuel, and Slayton would be something I’d personally be interested in seeing, and be an obvious upgrade by several notches for the offense.
