The Steelers swap practice squad defensive backs.

The Steelers swapped practice squad cornerbacks on Friday, with the team placing veteran Anthony Averett on the practice squad injured list and signing Zyon Gilbert in his place.

The roster moves were reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson.

Averett is a veteran defensive back who challenged for a roster spot with the Steelers this summer. Gilbert also spent time with the team during the preseason. Here’s what we wrote about him when he first joined the Steelers:

Gilbert signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He played college football at Florida Atlantic, where he recorded 50 total tackles and two interceptions in his final season. Gilbert ran a 4.4-second 40-yard dash at his pro day. With the Giants, Gilbert appeared in three games, starting one. He has 14 career tackles. The 6’1, 182-pound spent the 2023 season on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad.

Pittsburgh’s practice squad is full, but there is still an open spot on the 53-man roster entering a Week 7 matchup against the New York Jets.
