The black and gold will be turning green in 2025
The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to play the league’s first-ever regular-season game in Dublin, Ireland in 2025, the NFL announced Friday. Pittsburgh will serve as the home team for the historical international game, which will be played at the end of September, according to Ireland’s sports and tourism minister. The Steelers are rumored to face the Green Bay Packers in this contest, per Ben Burst of ESPN.
Much like an ice-cold Guinness, this news had been brewing for quite some time, given the Steelers’ close ties to the region. The Late Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland from 2009 to 2012. The Steelers actually played a pre-season game in July of 1997, when they beat the Chicago Bears. The game was played at Dublin’s Croke Park, where it will once again be held in the upcoming season.
In a statement, Steelers president Art Rooney II said:
“We are very excited to be the designated team in the first regular season game to be played in Ireland this upcoming season. The opportunity for the Pittsburgh Steelers to play in Ireland is truly special, not only because of the Rooney family history there, but also to play in front of the growing number of Steelers fans in Ireland. We are thrilled to be part of this historic event to represent Pittsburgh in a game that brings the NFL to the great sports fans in Ireland.”
This is the first time the Steelers will travel internationally to play a game since 2013, when they faced the Minnesota Vikings in London.
